Centre to set up 5-6 logistic parks in initial phase

Kolkata: With an aim to bring efficiency in logistics, the Centre is planning to develop five to six logistic parks in the initial phase, a top official said on Thursday.”In the initial phase, we may go ahead with 5-6 logistics parks across states. Locations of these parks for the initial phase have been identified,” A.D. James, Deputy Secretary in the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Logistic parks are likely to be developed at the locations in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana.

“Land has already been identified. Developers, partners and models for setting of these parks are to be identified. Action for preparation of detailed project report will start soon,” he added.He said the central government’s investment would be involved in developing trunk road infrastructure with rail, roads and waterways connectivity.”The cost associated with those would be borne by the centre. Developing the logistic parks could be done either by special purpose vehicle model or by other models depending on the states’ choice,” James said on the sidelines of an event ‘Facilitating implementation and stakeholder buy-in in the BBIN sub-region’ organised by Cuts International here.

The Ministry had earlier announced that it shortlisted 15 locations with the highest freight movement for the development of multi-modal logistics parks worth Rs 32,853 crore.It also announced as many as 44 Economic Corridors, 170 feeder routes and inter-city corridors, 35 logistics parks and 191 choke points have been identified for development to improve logistics efficiency of National Highways.
