New Delhi: India successfully test-fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile today with an extended range of 450 km, which is capable of carrying warhead from the Odisha coast.
According to Defence Ministry official, the test was done from the Abdul Kalam island off Odisha coast around 11 a.m.
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials said, the cruise missile was test fired from a mobile launcher from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here at about 11.33 AM.
The range of the missile was extended from 290 km to 450 km following India’s joining of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in June 2016.
The MTCR is an informal and voluntary partnership of countries to prevent proliferation of missile and unmanned aerial vehicle technology capable of carrying over 500 kg payload for more than 300 km. It prohibits member countries from giving such technology to countries outside the club.
The two-stage missile, one being solid and the second one ramjet liquid propellant, has already been inducted into the Army and Navy, while the Air Force version is in final stage of trial, they said.
The Army is already equipped with three regiments of Block III version of Brahmos missiles.
