Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati yesterday said in Lucknow on the occasion of 126th birth anniversary of Dalit icon DR Bhim Rao Ambedkar that her party is read to alliance with any party to save democracy against the ruling government of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in center.

The BSP supremo, for the first time since her party broke up its alliance with Samajwadi Party more than two decades ago, said that she was ready to join hands with any political party to defeat BJP.

Hinting that she was prepared to ally with her bugbear, SP, she told her supporters, “Zehar ko zehar se marenge (we will counter poison with poison).”

The former CM of UP while addressing her party members on Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, said the alliance with other parties was also needed to carry out the Bahujan movement and stop the communal forces from coming to office in the future.

On other hand, SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary while reacting to Mayawati’s comment said, “The party is committed to protecting the secular character of politics in India and will do whatever it takes to ensure it. The divisive forces (read BJP) have to be stopped. So, all like-minded parties should come together and BSP can join as well.” However, the comment left the question of leadership of any such alliance open.

Congress spokesperson Dwijendra Tripathi told said, “We must settle our differences and come together for this larger purpose.” For Mayawati, who is facing political oblivion, such an alliance is a necessity. The announcement is significant as UP civic bodies elections are scheduled in June and would be followed by Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypolls.
