Detained leaders Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti allowed to meet family members

SRINAGAR: The family members of former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were allowed to meet them on Sunday.

Both the leaders have been under detention after the Centre scrapped Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.Sources said Omar Abdullah’s sister and her children met him at the Hari Niwas guest house, where he has been lodged close to a month now. Sources also told India Today TV that Omar Abdullah has grown a beard as he hasn’t shaved for all this period.He has also apparently no access to TV and has been spending his time reading. Sources also said senior officials of Jammu and Kashmir met former CM Farooq Abdullah at his residence where he asked them to allow him to meet Omar Abdullah.

However, that has not been allowed yet.Farooq Abdullah has been under house arrest since August 5. He managed to sneak out a day after the decision of Article 370 was taken and had spoken to media. However, the security arrangement around his house was tightened, following which he has not been allowed to step out.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has also been allowed to meet her family as well. Sources said that her mother and sister have been allowed to meet her. After detention, Mufti has been spending most of her time praying and reading.While the situation in Kashmir continues to remain tense, restrictions were eased on Saturday in many parts of Kashmir.
