USA: In a first of its kind symbolic effort by India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 50 kilowatt ‘Gandhi Solar Park’ at the Headquarters of United Nations.
India has gifted 50 KW solar panels to the United Nations that have been installed at the terrace of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This gesture that celebrates the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi also highlights India’s willingness to go beyond the talk on climate change and delve into action. At a contribution of about one million dollars, India has gifted 193 solar panels that have been installed on the roof of the UN Headquarters. There will be one-panel for each of the 193 UN Member States.
PM inaugurated the solar park at UN Headquarters New York City, United States (US) during a special commemorative event that celebrated the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
World leaders including Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President of South Korea Moon-Jae-in were also present at the occasion in New York, US.
The leaders also launched a United Nations (UN) postage stamp of Mahatma Gandhi, at a special event- ‘Leadership Matters: Relevance of Gandhi in the Contemporary World’ in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber in UN Headquarters.
The event was hosted to celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, which will underline the continuing relevance of Gandhian thoughts and values in today’s world.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated ‘Gandhi Peace Garden’. The Garden is an innovative initiative under which the Consulate General of India in New York, Long Island-based NGO Shanti Fund and the State University of New York (Old Westbury) have entered into an agreement to plant 150 trees. The garden is dedicated to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. The initiative is a crowd sourced project, with people adopting trees in the memory of their loved ones. The garden is in an open site within the 600 acres campus of the University.
