Tiruchirappalli: Early on Tuesday officials in Tamil Nadu said Sujith Wilson’s body had been retrieved in a decomposed state, following an 82-hour rescue operation lasting four days. Sujith had fallen into the abandoned borewell while playing with friends. He had initially been stuck at about 10m (30ft) but then fell further into the 180 m-deep abandoned well.

The body of the 2-year-old boy Sujith Wilson trapped in an abandoned borewell in Nadukattupatti village in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli district was taken out on early Tuesday.

The boy fell into the borewell around 5.30 p.m. on Friday and got stuck at 30 feet and rescue efforts began soon after that. Later that night, he fell further down to about 90 feet. Speaking to reporters in the wee hours of Tuesday, J. Radhakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Revenue Administration, Disaster Management and Mitigation department said bad foul started emanating from the borewell and the medical teams also confirmed the death.

According to officials, the borewell, and also the hole drilled near it to rescue the boy, will be closed soon. On Saturday, the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force took over the rescue operation as other techniques used to take the boy out of the borewell have failed.

After a post mortem at a government hospital, the body of Sujith Wilson was handed over to his parents who buried him in a heart wrenching funeral conducted by the local parish priest at a nearby graveyard.

The tragedy had drawn national attention with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeting words of sympathy and encouragement.
