Lucknow: Citizens will soon get some relief from waiting hours to perform last rites of their loved ones as Lucknow Municipal Corporation has installed the two machines at city’s first ‘Greenatoriums’ located in Baikunth Dham at Bandha Road.
According to LMC officials, the greenatorium is the option for people to go for traditional way of performing last rites for their loved ones without damaging the air quality of the city as it will consist characteristics of both electronic and traditional way of funeral.
Explaining its functioning , LMC officials said that the machine will have a cascade where the body will be kept along with wood and pyre. After performing last rituals, the pyre will be lit up and the chamber will be closed for burning the body.
To stop toxic gas emitted by burning of body for getting contaminated with atmosphere, the gas will be mixed with water to be turned into vapor before getting released to air through a chimney. Greenatorium will only take 150 kg of wood for performing a funeral as compared to traditional way funeral which requires around 350 kg of wood. Greenatorium will cost around Rs 300- Rs 500 as compared to the traditional way of wooden pyre which costs over Rs 4,000.
The project was initiated by City mayor Sanyukta Bhatia last year in May. She said, “Greenatoriums will provide people to go for traditional funeral without damaging the air quality. Lucknow will become the first city in UP to have green crematoriums. The services of the crematorium will start very soon.”
