After Pakistani fashion brand Mannat Clothing uploaded photographs on their social media platforms of a model wearing their clothes at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan’s Kartarpur without a headscarf, massive outrage erupted online.
Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara in Pakistan is a holy site for Sikhs. At gurdwaras across the world, all visitors are required to keep their heads covered.
In response to the outrage, the government of the Punjab province of Pakistan said an investigation has been ordered and “strict legal action will be taken against those responsible”. Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has asked for a complete report on the matter.
From its official Twitter handle, the Government of Punjab wrote, “CM Punjab Usman Buzdar has taken strict notice of the incident at Kartarpur’s gurdwara and asked for a complete report from the chief secretary. A thorough inquiry will be done on this incident. CM Punjab reiterated that all religions are respected in Pakistan.”
Meanwhile, Punjab Police tweeted, “Punjab Police are investigating all aspects related to this incident and strict legal action will be taken against responsible. Management of concerned brand and model are being investigated. Worship places of all religions are equally respectable.”
Pakistan’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said in a tweet, “The designer and the model must apologise to Sikh community. Kartarpur Sahib is a religious symbol and not a film set.”
