Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurate Kanpur Metro Project: Here are all the details about the project

The Manchester of the East, Kanpur city is about to get reformed to be a part of one of the metro cities of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence at the inaugural ceremony is one of the important focuses of areas under urban mobility. The major project came into effect after the successful run in the metro cities in the state of Uttar Pradesh: Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Greater Noida. Kanpur city was the fourth city in the state to be a part of the metropolitan area.

Kanpur Metro Project: Route map

Route 1:The 23.8 km long route from IIT to Naubasta has 22 stations, including 14 above-ground stations and the rest of the 8 underground.

Route 2:The 8.60 km route covers Agriculture University to Barra-8, which will cover a total of 8 stations that covers 4 above ground and the rest underground.

The routes covering prominent educational institutions: In addition, the IIT Kanpur to Naubasta corridor will travel through the heart of the city, institutions covering prominent educational institutions like railway and bus stations along with IIT Kanpur.

Kanpur Metro Project: Metro Fares or ticket price

The metro fares have not been announced, which might be decided later.

The plans for the collection of metro fares will consider the automatic fare collection (AFC) system for QR codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) phones to utilize the system.

Kanpur Metro Project: Timeline

  • October 04, 2016: The foundation stone for the Kanpur metro is laid by the Akhilesh Yadav government.
  • September 20, 2017: Centre asked for the submission of the details regarding the project
  • September 05, 2018: The government of UP sent a new DPR for the Kanpur Metro to the centre.
  • February 28, 2019: The Union cabinet approved the metro project initiation.
  • March 08, 2019: The prime minister initiated the foundation stone of Kanpur Metro.
  • November 15, 2019: The construction work was flagged off by the Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath
  • November 10, 2021: The official trial run begins
  • December 28, 2021: PM to inaugurate the Kanpur Metro stretch

Kanpur Metro Project: Some interesting facts

The entire metro project of 2 lines and 30 stations will now be a part of the metro cities in India.

Earlier, a trial run of a 9-km-long priority section (IIT-Kanpur to Motijheel) of corridor-I of the Kanpur metro project was flagged by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath.

The total cost of the metro is approximately Rs 11,000 crore and extends to a 32 km distance to be travelled.

The entire stretch of Kanpur Metro Rail Project is financed mainly via equity from the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh on a 50:50 basis.

In addition, with a EUR 650 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) which took place on July 15, 2020.

The project will provide benefits to over 40 lakh passengers with maximum coverage of over 9 cities.
