England and former Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Sam Curran on Saturday confirmed that he won’t be part of the IPL 2022 mega auction, set to be held on February 12 and 13. Curran said he will focus on recovering completely from a back injury that kept him out of the T20 World Cup and the Ashes.
Sam Curran was not retained by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the mega auction as the defending champions went for MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja as their four picks. Curran has been an integral member of their squad since joining the side from Punjab Kings in IPL 2020.
Curran has played 32 matches in the IPL, scoring 337 runs at a strike rate of close to 150 and picked up 32 wickets.
Curran said he is hoping to resume competitive action with Surrey during the English summer.
“It was agreed that sadly I should not enter the IPL auction this year and to focus on my rehabilitation. I’m back in the nets and feeling great so hope to be back soon, Wishing everyone all the best for the tournament. I look forward to starting the season with,” he added.
IPL 2022 will have 10 teams with the inclusion of new teams from Ahmedabad and Lucknow. On Saturday, the BCCI said as many as 1214 players, including 896 Indians and 318 overseas, registered for the IPL 2022 auction.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah, after a virtual meeting with the franchise owners, said that the board is working towards hosting the IPL 2022 in India. However, he added that the board will work towards coming up with a plan B to make sure the tournament doesn’t get affected by the evolving Covid-19 situation.
