Two cheetahs, Oban and Asha were released at the Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP) on Saturday, six months after they were brought from Namibia.

Until being released in the wild, the cheetahs were kept at the hunting enclosure at Kuno National Park.

“Oban and Asha were among the eight cheetahs brought to Kuno National Park in September last year. They were released into the wild on Saturday,” said principal chief conservator of forests J S Chauhan on Saturday.

Oban was released first and Asha a few hours later in the afternoon.

“Remaining cheetahs from this batch of eight will be released in the wild in a staggered manner,” the officials added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2022 had released eight cheetahs brought from Namibia which include five females and three males as an effort to revive the species’ population in India. Cheetahs became extinct in India over seven decades ago.
