New Delhi: Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has joined the Congress, on Monday deftly side-stepped questions on his possible chief ministerial candidature for Punjab.”Gehu khet mai, beta pet mai, aur tum vivah ki phikar kar rahe ho (Wheat is in the fields, the child is in the womb and you are worried about his marriage),” said Sidhu on being asked about his possible CM candidature.Asked if he was ruling it out, Sidhu replied: “Politics is not done in ifs and buts. No if, no but..only Sidhu – the Jat” – he said cracking a joke.Sidhu also said he would contest from whichever constituency the party asked him to stand from.
Asked if he would contest from Lambi against the Badals, he said: “I have never said I am going to fight from Lambi.”To a question on reported differences with Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh and working under his leadership, Sidhu said: “In politics, differences of opinion are there. “If two nations can resolve issues sitting across the table then why can’t two individuals. If Laluji (Lalu Prasad Yadav) and Nitishji (Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar) can come together, then why not…,” said Sidhu.”I am ready to work under anybody that the Congress High Command suggests. I am a soldier. I am there to fight for Punjab. The goal is Punjab not individual battles,” he added.
