Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Tehran on Thursday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. Jaishankar’s visit is being seen as an attempt to reduce the bitterness in relations between the two countries. In the last few years, the distance between the two countries had increased due to various reasons. India had stopped importing oil from Iran due to US sanctions and there were substantial differences between the two countries over the work in Chabahar Port.
Apart from this, India has also been angry with Iran’s statement on Kashmir. In view of Jaishankar’s recent visit, it is being said that India wants to balance the relations between Iran, America, Saudi Arabia and Israel. After the Modi government came to power in India in 2014, it is said that friendship with Israel has strengthened. Prime Minister Modi became the first Prime Minister of India to visit Israel. But in the foreign policy of the Modi government, there was a kind of pressure regarding Iran.
This pressure was due to US sanctions. India had to stop the import of oil from Iran under American pressure, while Iran was ready to give oil to India in Indian currency only. Regarding Jaishankar’s visit to Iran, the Indian Foreign Ministry has said that the External Affairs Minister will be in Iran on August 5 and 6 at the invitation of the Government of Iran. During this visit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also met Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi.
