Lucknow: Three (Ghaziabad, Kanpur and Meerut) out of seven cities in Uttar Pradesh improved their rankings in Swachh Bharat Survey 2021, while Varanasi, Prayagraj and Agra slipped in the rankings as compared to last year. Lucknow, however managed to hold its position in the rankings securing 12th position.

Ghaziabad (18th), Kanpur (21st), Agra (24th), Prayagraj (26th), Meerut (27th) and Varanasi (30th)
The rankings were released by the union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MOHUA) on Saturday and based on a cleanliness survey done across the country after dividing cities and towns into categories based on their population. The housing ministry had divided cities in two categories with population under 10 lakhs in which 372 cities participated and more than 10 lakh (48 cities).
Unlike SBS 2020, which had four parameters Citizen Feedback (1,500 marks), Certification (1,500 marks), Direct observation (1,500) and Service level progress (1,500). All 4,320 cities were evaluated only in three categories, Citizen Feedback (1,800 marks), Service Level Progress (2,400 marks) and Certification (1,800 marks).
As, direct observation was removed, some other parameters under service level progress were added including Water Plus protocol and sewage treatment were included under the parameter.
Lucknow improved its score to (4586.17/6000) in comparison to (4,120/6000) last year. Similarly, Kanpur also improved its score (3847.67/ 6000) as compared to (3783/6,000). A marginal decline was witnessed in score of Ghaziabad with the city scoring (4220.90/6000) as compared to (4283/6000).
Scoring of cities including Agra (3715.53/6000), (4391) last year, Prayagraj (3613/6,000) (4141) last year and Varanasi (3532/6000) (3684) last year were reduced as compared to last year.
Overall, among 13 states with 100 or more urban local bodies in the country, UP was placed at sixth place above Odisha, Punjab, Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Bihar.
Several cities including Varanasi and Kannuaj bagged top honors in all the subcategories of the newly introduced “Cleanest Ganga Town” category. Lucknow was awarded “Best State Capital under Citizens Feedback”, “Cleanest Medium City” Noida, and “Big City Innovations and Best Practices” Ghaziabad.
