Australian opener David Warner sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 6.25 crore

Australia opening batsman David Warner was sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 6.25 in the IPL 2022 Auctions. Warner was sacked as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain last season and was subsequently dropped from the team. However, he starred with the bat a few weeks later as Australia went on to win the T20 World Cup.

David Warner was expected to have a big cheque day. One of the most explosive batsmen in modern-day cricket, he has a stellar record in the IPL and was the man who fashioned an IPL triumph for the team in 2016.

This is not the first time Warner will appear for Delhi. He had started his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils in 2008 and made an immediate impact. Over the years, however, he had become an integral part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad and it came as a huge surprise when SRH dumped him unceremoniously after one good season.

Warner did not even spend time in the SRH dugout after being dropped from the team for the second time in IPL 2021. However, the Australian star was seen supporting the franchise from the stands in the UAE even as SRH struggled to manage any kind of momentum through their campaign.

Following their final group-stage match, Warner took to Instagram to share photos from his journey and thanked the franchise and his teammates for providing him with an opportunity to lead the team.

“My Instagram post was a special one because you don’t know what’s happening next year. Any time I post something on my social media, it’s either my family or people that mean the most to me and SunRisers have given me that opportunity to lead,” Warner said.

“The fans have been great, we won an IPL trophy while I was there, a great bunch of guys that I have played with and we don’t know what’s going to happen next year. There are two new teams, there is going to be a big auction and a lot of that is not up to us.

“Sometimes, you get that feeling that you are not going to be retained with little signs that you can see around the group. From my perspective, I can see the writing was on the wall and it was an appropriate time to say thank you,” he added.
