Around 50 supporters of the left wing student unions who clashed with the police were arrested, while they were protesting against the death of a former student leader Anis Khan in Howrah.
Several police personnel and protesters were injured, and a few vehicles were also torched outside the superintendent of police office
The demand for the arrest of some senior police officers were the main demands that were put up by the protesters. A homeguard and a civic police volunteer involved in the case have already been arrested last week.
Amid the investigation, the local residents on Saturday morning launched ferocious protest before the burial ground at Amta. The protest fend off the investigation team, examining the death case. The protesters ceased the investigation team to unearth the body for a second post- mortem as per the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
When the special investigating team went to the burial ground at 5:30 to dig up the body for a second post mortem, the villagers started raising slogans and alleged the police with “murder” of their leader.
The villagers surrounded the police vehicle making it impossible to proceed with their orders of exhuming the body. The members of the investigating team left the spot shortly after.
“We never said we won’t allow police to carry out a second post-mortem. We informed SIT that I am not well. So, they were requested to come back Monday. But they returned late at night and again at 5am. Is this the time for post-mortem? Why were they in hurry?” alleged by Anis’s father Saleem.
The youth leaders Minakshi Mukherjee, Mayukh Biswas and Srijan Bhattacharya were arrested during the protest. The Chairman of the Left Front, Biwan Basu said, “In this case, police are complicit everywhere. Police are trying to protect the culprits. If this goes one, the state will face a huge protest.”
