The Uttar Prdesh state government will establish an ‘asthi bank’ at the Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi soon. The Manikarnika Ghat is the largest and the most pious cremation grounds in India.
The officials said the ‘asthi bank’ would help people preserve the ashes, but also give a respectful last rite to friends and family members.
“Asthi bank will be constructed at Manikarnika Ghat, where the ashes could be preserved prior for immersion. The proposal was sent to the state government, which has given a green signal and the bank could become operational by next year”, said an official at the Varanasi Municipal Corporation.
As per the officials’ 100-120 dead bodies are cremated every day at Manikarnika Ghat. With such many bodies at disposal, it often becomes difficult for the family members, to wait to collect the ashes.
As a solution, the asthi bank will be established allowing people to preserve the ashes till the family arrives for immersion.
