WHO decided to name the new variants of Covid-19 with a new system. Considering that Covid’s variants were being linked to the country, the WHO decided to name the Corona variants as Greek letters.
Variants of Corona were found in all countries, and the name of the country was added in front of that variant. When people named it Bharat from the variant found in India, some people criticized it. After which WHO took this decision and under this rule, B.1.617.1 found in India for the first time will be called Kappa and B.1.617.2 will be called delta.
Under this rule, the variant of Britain will be called Alpha and the variant of South Africa will be called Beta. WHO said that this decision has been made to make the conversation easier and to ensure that the names of the variants are not associated with any country.
Earlier this month, the Government of India criticized calling B.1.617.2 Indian variants. Although WHO had not officially associated the name of any variant with any country in the past.
